An unlucky weekend. Choi was a putt from a playoff, Si Woo Kim went into Sunday three back and finished fourth, and Bermuda lost its final round with two of the tips still in range of the places. Almost every tip was in contention at some point, the Champions Tour pair being the exception. Two bets paid and returned 6.75 points, the other seven cost 9.78, and the week finished 3.03 points down.
Hye-Jin Choi 16/1, 1.5pts e/w, +4.50
BMW Ladies Championship, tied second at 16 under
Choi opened with a 71 and was tied 30th, then shot 66, 66 and 69 to finish one behind Yuri Yoshida, who won her first LPGA title at 17 under. Choi was second after round three and had a short birdie putt on the final day that would have forced a playoff, with her playing partner’s putt having shown her the line. It missed. It is her second runner-up finish in a row after Shanghai, and she is still without an LPGA win. Haeran Ryu, who led after rounds two and three, shot 73 and tied with her. Five places at 1/4 meant the place part returned 6.00 in profit and the win part lost 1.5 points, a net of +4.50.
Corey Conners 20/1, 0.75pts e/w, +2.25
Butterfield Bermuda Championship, tied third at 14 under
Conners opened with a 63 and was second, then shot 67 and 69, and was tied third when weather wiped out the final round and the tournament was settled over 54 holes. Austin Smotherman beat Seamus Power in a playoff at 16 under. Ten places at 1/5 meant the place part returned 3.00 in profit and the win part lost 0.75, a net of +2.25.
Eric Cole and Denny McCarthy 20/1 and 25/1, −3.50
Butterfield Bermuda Championship, tied 25th and tied 15th after 54 holes
Cole shot 65 and 65 and was tied fourth after round two, then had a 74. McCarthy had a 64 in round two to sit tied ninth, then shot 71. Both went into Sunday within reach of the ten places, McCarthy five shots off the lead and Cole seven, with a full round to make it up. That round was never played, and the 54-hole finishes stood. If there was time to play a playoff, there was time to play the round. McCarthy so often finishes with a strong last round, Cole had already shown he could cut back into it, and Conners knows how to win, so all three had a Sunday worth having. Cole cost two points and McCarthy 1.5.
Si Woo Kim 13/2, 2pts e/w, −2.28
Genesis Championship, tied fourth at 10 under
Kim shot 67, 69 and 67 and was tied third going into Sunday, three behind Yuto Katsuragawa, with the home crowd behind him. His closing 71 was the wrong round at the wrong time, and Katsuragawa won at 13 under. Kim finished in an eight-way tie for fourth, so the three remaining places were shared between eight players and the place part was paid at a dead heat of 3/8. It returned 1.73 on a two-point stake, and with the win part lost the bet cost 2.28.
Shannon Tan 11/4, 1pt win, −1.00
Hero Women’s Indian Open, third at 4 under
The defending champion shot 68, 77, 67 and 72 and finished third. Pornanong Phatlum won by four from Vani Kapoor. It was a win-only bet, so third paid nothing.
Auston Kim 28/1, 0.5pts e/w, −1.00
BMW Ladies Championship, withdrew after round one
Kim opened with a 77 and withdrew. That is twice in a row: she also pulled out after one round in Shanghai the week before. Both bets were settled as losses of the whole stake. Twice in two weeks is not acceptable from a tour player, and she will not be backed here again.
George McNeill and Ryan Armour 40/1 and 28/1, −2.00
Stifel Charity Classic, tied 17th and tied 59th
The only tips that were never involved. McNeill closed with a 67 to finish tied 17th at 6 under, eight behind Rory Sabbatini, who shot 62 in the final round to win. Armour was tied 59th at 1 over. Each cost one point.
The week
Choi placed at 16/1, Conners placed at 20/1 and Si Woo Kim placed too, yet the week still finished down, because the dead heat cut Kim’s place return to three-eighths and Bermuda took away the round McCarthy needed. A one-shot swing for Choi and a fourth round in Bermuda were the difference between this and a winning week. The season stands at +4.96 points from 54.5 points staked.
Prices and terms are those posted on Wednesday 21 October. Each-way stakes are per part, so the nine bets were 16 points in all, and all nine are settled on the record. The original tips and reasoning are in the preview. The next card goes up on the home page before Thursday’s first tee.
